Second-line Flu Vaccine Guidance

With patient demand for flu vaccinations remaining high, pharmacy contractors are reminded to follow the requirements for the use of second-line flu vaccines.

Under the service specification, patients should first be signposted to another provider with available stock or invited to rebook. Second-line vaccines should only be used in exceptional circumstances, for example where first-line vaccines cannot be accessed locally.

Pharmacies should maintain a record of the steps taken to verify local vaccine availability before offering an alternative vaccine.
